About this position

This fully funded doctoral student position at Chalmers University of Technology focuses on the discovery of advanced material models using physics-encoded neural networks. The project, titled “Material Model Discovery from Physics-Encoded Neural Networks,” aims to achieve unprecedented accuracy and computational efficiency in modeling material behavior, enabling engineers to maximize the potential of new high-performance materials.

As a doctoral student, you will join the Division of Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering within the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The division is known for its inclusive, collaborative, and innovative research environment, with a strong emphasis on mechanics-based solutions and virtual tools for engineering challenges. The research will address the integration of machine learning with constitutive modeling, ensuring that physical laws are respected while enhancing the interpretability and applicability of neural network-based models. The primary focus is on modeling large plastic deformations, but the developed methods will be broadly applicable to various mechanical and physical processes.

The project will tackle three main challenges: enforcing physical constraints in neural network-enhanced constitutive models, extracting interpretable equations from these models, and developing training strategies for scenarios with limited experimental data. Your work will contribute to accelerating the adoption of new materials in engineering applications and advancing the field of computational materials science.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Applied Mechanics, Structural Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Mathematics/Physics, or a closely related field. Experience in computer programming, solid mechanics, and finite element methods is required, along with strong English communication skills. Additional experience in machine learning and research projects is advantageous. Physical presence in Sweden is mandatory for the duration of the doctoral studies, and a valid residence permit must be presented at the start.

The position is fully funded for four years (extendable to five with teaching duties), with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month and full employee benefits. Applicants must have a Master's degree (120 credits) or a Magister's degree (60 credits) in Applied Mechanics, Structural Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Mathematics/Physics, or a closely related field. For students educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted. Experience in computer programming, knowledge in solid mechanics and finite element methods (including programming), and strong written and verbal English skills are mandatory. Additional qualifications that strengthen the application include coursework in machine learning and prior research project experience. Physical presence in Sweden is required for the duration of the doctoral studies, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
