About this position
This doctoral position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology focuses on rocket propulsion and reactive flows, specifically targeting predictive maintenance and health-aware operation of rocket nozzle cooling channels for methane/oxygen (methalox) engines. As reusable space launchers become more prevalent, understanding and mitigating catalytic pyrolysis and carbon deposition in cooling channels is crucial for enhancing engine longevity and performance. The research leverages the MERiT/MERiT+ infrastructure at KTH and is conducted in close collaboration with GKN Aerospace, offering a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of academia and industry.
The project is funded by the Swedish Space Research School (SSRS) and the Swedish Space Agency, ensuring robust financial support and access to advanced facilities. The PhD candidate will engage in both experimental and modeling work to investigate how fuel composition and surface conditions affect deposit formation and thermal resistance. The goal is to develop monitoring indicators and operational strategies that facilitate faster refurbishment and reduce risks in reusable engines.
Applicants must meet the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance requirements for postgraduate education, including a second cycle degree (master's or equivalent) or at least 240 higher education credits with 60 at the second-cycle level. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Experience in experimental work related to fluid mechanics, heat transfer, or reactive flows is advantageous. Selection emphasizes personal skills such as independence, collaboration, professionalism, and analytical ability.
The position offers a full-time contract with a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement. Employment is initially for one year, with possible renewals up to four years total. Doctoral students at KTH benefit from a creative and dynamic environment, attractive benefits, and a strong commitment to equality and diversity. The research is part of Sweden’s strategic push for advanced space propulsion capabilities.
To apply, candidates must submit a complete application via KTH's recruitment system, including certified copies of diplomas, grades, language certificates, CV, and an application letter outlining academic interests and motivation. Translations are required if documents are not in English or Swedish. Applications must be received by the deadline. For further information, contact Dr. Jens Fridh at [email protected].
