About this position
The KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, invites applications for a doctoral student position in three-dimensional spatial omics. This research project is part of the Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) research school, a national initiative funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, aiming to advance computational and data science capabilities in Sweden. The DDLS program focuses on four strategic research areas: cell and molecular biology, evolution and biodiversity, precision medicine and diagnostics, and epidemiology and biology of infection.
The doctoral student will develop and apply methods in three-dimensional spatial omics, combining computational and laboratory-based approaches. The project will involve both programming and wet-lab work, and is designed to fundamentally transform our understanding of cellular function by examining molecular components in time and space, from single molecules to tissue environments. The research is highly interdisciplinary, integrating biotechnology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, and computational biology.
Supervision will be provided by Dr. Patrik Ståhl (main supervisor) and Dr. Ian Hoffecker (co-supervisor), with opportunities to collaborate with other doctoral students and postdocs in the lab. The DDLS research school offers a vibrant academic environment, with more than 260 PhD students and 200 postdocs participating in the program. The position is based at KTH, a leading international technical university committed to sustainability, equality, and innovation.
Applicants must have a second cycle degree (such as a master's) or equivalent, or at least 240 higher education credits with at least 60 at second-cycle level. Specific eligibility requirements include introductory courses in programming and bioinformatics, as well as introductory and advanced courses in gene technology. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Previous experience with method development in spatial omics is considered a merit. Candidates will be assessed on their ability to work independently, collaborate, demonstrate professionalism, and analyze complex issues. Personal skills are highly valued.
The position is fully funded, offering a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement and a range of employee benefits. Employment is temporary, with a maximum duration corresponding to four years of full-time doctoral education. The position may be renewed annually or for up to two years at a time. The successful candidate will have access to excellent working conditions, a creative and dynamic environment, and a strong doctoral student network.
To apply, submit your application through KTH's recruitment system. Required documents include diplomas, grades, certificates of language requirements, CV, application letter, and representative publications or technical reports. Translations are needed if documents are not in English or Swedish. Applications must be received by midnight CET on May 14, 2026.
