About this position

The Light and Matter Physics Division at KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a doctoral student position focused on topological spin textures for neuromorphic functionality. This research opportunity is embedded within the Quantum Technology & Materials group, which specializes in the synthesis, engineering, and characterization of quantum materials, including superconductors and magnetic systems with topological spin textures and emergent quasiparticles. The group leverages both in-house experimental facilities and large-scale collaborations with theoretical physicists, offering a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment.

The doctoral project aims to bridge the gap between topological spin textures and neuromorphic information processing, emphasizing device-relevant material platforms and engineered interfaces. The successful candidate will be responsible for engineering and characterizing heterostructures and interfaces based on transition metal compounds and low-dimensional magnetic materials. Key tasks include designing, fabricating, and optimizing material systems, performing advanced experimental characterization using laboratory and large-scale techniques, and conducting quantitative data analysis.

Supervision will be provided by Associate Professor Yasmine Sassa. The position is full-time and offers a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement, along with attractive employee benefits. The employment is for up to four years, with renewal possible, and includes opportunities for professional development and participation in training and administrative tasks (up to 20% of the role).

Applicants must meet the admission requirements for postgraduate education, which include holding a second cycle degree (such as a master's degree) or equivalent, and demonstrating English proficiency equivalent to English B/6. Recommended skills include clean-room expertise, sputtering deposition technique, and thin film characterization. Selection criteria focus on personal skills such as goal orientation, perseverance, independence, collaboration, professionalism, and analytical ability. Certified copies of diplomas, grades, and language certificates are required, with translations if documents are not in English or Swedish.

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is a leading international technical university located in Stockholm, Sweden. The institution is committed to advancing education, research, and innovation for a sustainable society, and offers a creative and dynamic environment with good working conditions and a strong emphasis on equality, diversity, and equal opportunities.

To apply, candidates must submit their application through KTH's recruitment system by the deadline of February 27, 2026. Required documents include a CV, application letter (maximum 2 pages), certified copies of diplomas and grades, and certificates of fulfilled language requirements. Applicants should ensure all documents are translated into English or Swedish if necessary and follow the instructions in the advertisement for a complete application.

For further information, contact Associate Professor Yasmine Sassa at [email protected]. More details and the application portal can be found at KTH's recruitment system.
