About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Trustworthy and Resilient Automotive Cybersecurity. This research opportunity is based at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, a joint department of Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg, renowned for its international research profile and strong industry collaborations. The division of Computer and Network Systems focuses on designing secure, dependable, and high-performance computer and communication systems for an increasingly digital and interconnected world.

The doctoral project addresses the cybersecurity challenges in modern vehicles and future automated driving systems. It aims to develop system mechanisms that support security monitoring and Automotive Digital Forensics (ADF) in automotive systems. The research will focus on methods for collecting and analyzing system data in complex vehicle platforms, considering constraints related to safety, system resources, and performance. The project is highly relevant to evolving regulatory requirements and the need for improved security approaches in the automotive sector.

As a doctoral student, you will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Computer Science and Engineering, develop and pursue an independent research project, and communicate your research results both verbally and in writing. The position also includes teaching or other departmental duties up to 20% of working hours. You will collaborate with industrial stakeholders, including Volvo Cars and other partners in the MAGIC project, contributing to research with direct relevance for future automotive systems.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (120 credits) or a Master’s degree (60 credits) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. For students with education outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong English communication skills and a background in cybersecurity, computer systems, or networking are required. Additional strengths include good academic performance, a high-quality MSc thesis or equivalent, experience with experimental evaluation methods, and interest in research at the intersection of cybersecurity, AI, digital forensics, and complex software systems. Physical presence in Sweden is required for the duration of the studies, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date.

Funding: The position is fully funded from the start, with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (as of May 25, 2025). The appointment is for four years, with the possibility to extend up to five years with teaching duties. Doctoral students are employees and enjoy full employee benefits, including access to Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Chalmers is committed to gender equality and diversity, offering a dynamic and inclusive working environment in Gothenburg.

Application: Applications must be submitted in English via the provided online portal. Required documents include a CV, personal letter, degree certificates, transcripts, thesis, and other relevant certificates. Incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. The deadline for applications is April 25, 2026.
