About this position

The KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, invites applications for a doctoral student (licentiate) position in metal powder production within the third-cycle subject of Engineering Materials Science. The research project focuses on the efficient and sustainable production of metal powders using techniques such as gas atomisation, ball milling, and chemical reactions. These powders are intended for use in additive manufacturing and other high-value technical applications, including magnets.

The research will be primarily experimental, complemented by calculations and simulations. The main objectives are to optimise powder properties, improve production efficiency, and implement advanced measurement and process control methods. The project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of materials for cutting-edge technologies and sustainable manufacturing.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Christopher Hulme. The position is based at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, a leading international technical university known for its creative and dynamic environment, excellent working conditions, and commitment to equality, diversity, and sustainability.

Applicants must meet the admission requirements for postgraduate education, including a second cycle degree (master's or equivalent), or at least 240 higher education credits with 60 at the second-cycle level. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Candidates should demonstrate relevant laboratory and experimental experience, knowledge of metallurgy and metal powders, and familiarity with modelling techniques such as computational fluid dynamics and thermodynamic modelling. Personal skills such as goal orientation, perseverance, independence, collaboration, professionalism, and analytical ability are highly valued.

The position is full-time, temporary, and offers a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement, along with employee benefits. Employment is initially for one year, with possible renewal up to two years at a time, not exceeding the period required for a licentiate degree (two years full-time).

To apply, submit your application through KTH's recruitment system. Applications must include certified copies of diplomas and grades, proof of language requirements, CV, application letter (max 2 pages), and representative publications or technical reports. Translations into English or Swedish are required if documents are not in these languages. Applications must be received by the closing date, 2026-06-30.

For further information, contact Dr. Christopher Hulme at [email protected]. Please note that some positions may require security clearance. KTH firmly declines contact with staffing and recruitment agencies.

Join KTH and contribute to shaping the future through research, education, and innovation in a supportive and forward-thinking academic environment.
