About this position

This fully funded PhD position at Coventry University offers an exciting opportunity to explore the fundamental aspects of dynamical symmetry breaking and restoration in closed quantum systems. The project is based within the Centre for Fluid and Complex Systems and supervised by Prof C R Rylands. It focuses on theoretical many-body quantum physics, particularly the role of symmetry and symmetry breaking in non-equilibrium systems. The research aims to uncover universal aspects of symmetry in the relaxation of many-body quantum systems and investigate novel phenomena in experimentally relevant settings.

The main research objectives include studying local dynamical symmetry restoration and breaking, addressing questions such as whether local microscopic symmetry breaking can destroy macroscopic symmetry restoration, and whether many-body quantum systems can dynamically enhance or suppress charge fluctuations. The project will employ analytic methods supported by numerical simulations across a range of theoretical models. Students will gain expertise in analytic and numerical techniques for describing free, non-equilibrium systems, including both discrete and continuous time dynamics. The research will expand to include interactions, analytically tractable systems such as integrable models, dual unitary quantum circuits, and random unitary dynamics, as well as developing tools to explore more general interacting systems.

The successful candidate will receive comprehensive research training, including technical, personal, and professional skills. All researchers at Coventry University are part of the Doctoral College Researcher College, which provides high-quality training and career development activities. The position is fully funded, covering tuition fees and a stipend.

Entry requirements include a minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline with at least 60% in the project element or equivalent and a minimum 60% overall module average. Candidates must demonstrate the potential to engage in innovative research and complete the PhD within 3.5 years. English language proficiency is required (IELTS academic overall minimum score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component). A strong background in theoretical physics, a strong academic record, and high motivation are essential. Familiarity with many-body quantum physics is highly desirable, and some experience with scientific computing is advantageous. The candidate is expected to participate in activities within the Centre for Fluid and Complex Systems and collaborate with the existing network in the UK and internationally.
