About this position

The University of Twente is offering an EngD position focused on developing an interactive reverse logistics map for circular construction as part of the CIRCOLOGIC project. The construction sector faces increasing demands to reduce CO2 emissions, limit material consumption, and transition to circular and modular construction methods. While logistics for new construction have seen optimization, the reverse logistics—what happens to materials from donor buildings during renovation, transformation, or deconstruction—remains underexplored. Many valuable building components are downcycled or discarded due to technical, logistical, economic, and organizational barriers, including uncertainty about material availability, quality, timing, transport, storage, costs, and liability.

This EngD project aims to bridge these gaps by leveraging digital tools such as BIM, product passports, digital twins, and data-driven logistics. The project will deliver three main components: an interactive geographical map, a calculation/optimization module, and a scenario engine. These tools will support construction actors in making informed reuse and replacement decisions. The main activities include defining use cases and requirements with partners Dura Vermeer, University of Twente, and TNO; designing a data model that integrates logistics, emissions, material characteristics, and reuse concepts; developing a GIS-like interactive map and scenario engine for comparing various construction scenarios; piloting the tool in real (de)construction projects; and evaluating its impact on emission reduction, reuse potential, logistics efficiency, and planning reliability. The project is embedded within two larger research initiatives—ECOLOGIC (optimizing construction logistics) and PACER (circular and emission-free renovation)—and a Joint Innovation Center (JIC) involving UT and TNO.

Applicants should be enthusiastic and motivated to conduct design science research in close collaboration with industry partners. A master's degree in Construction Management & Engineering, Civil Engineering & Management, Architecture, Business Administration, Organizational Studies, Computer Science, or a related field is required. Candidates should have affinity with qualitative research methods, a creative mindset, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work across multiple organizations and consortia. Proficiency in English is mandatory, and Dutch is preferred or willingness to learn. The position offers a two-year contract, flexibility to work partially from home, a tailored post-master design programme (50% educational, 50% design project), a gross monthly salary of €3029, holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension scheme, generous leave hours, free access to sports facilities, parental leave, and excellent career support.

To apply, submit your application via the provided link before June 8, 2026, including a cover letter (max 2 pages) and a CV listing courses, grades, publications, and references. Proof of English proficiency may be requested. For further information, contact Dr. Marc van den Berg or Dr. Rob Bemthuis. Interviews are scheduled for June 22. The Faculty of Engineering Technology at University of Twente is committed to developing smart, sustainable, human-centred solutions for societal challenges, connecting education, research, and practice across core domains such as asset & maintenance engineering, intelligent manufacturing systems, personalized health technology, resilience engineering, and sustainable production, energy, and resources.
