Project Title: Intelligent Energy Management for Fuel Cell-Battery Energy Storage System in Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing Aircraft (eVTOL) for Efficiency Improvement and Operation Safety
We’re pleased to offer a fully funded EPSRC DLA PhD studentship (for UK Home students) starting October 2025, co-supervised by Truong Quang Dinh , James Marco , and myself.
This exciting project addresses real-world energy and safety challenges in the next generation of electric aviation by combining:
?? Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS)
?? AI & Optimisation
?? Model Predictive Control (MPC)
?? Robust and adaptive system modelling
?? The goal: To design a resilient energy management system (EMS) that ensures performance, safety, and efficiency for urban air mobility.
The student will also have access to cutting-edge physical lab facilities at WMG to support real-time evaluation and experimental R&D.
? Who should apply?
Candidates from control, electrical/mechanical engineering, computer science, or energy systems backgrounds. Experience in AI, aerospace, electrification, or optimisation is desirable.
