About this position

Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is seeking an Engineer/Postdoc in laser processing (80-100%) for its Laboratory of Advanced Materials Processing (LAMP). LAMP is a multidisciplinary unit specializing in innovative functional modification of materials using beam and plasma-induced processing. The lab's research spans the full technology development cycle, from novel materials and beam-matter interaction physics to automated AI/ML systems for materials processing and quality assurance.

The position involves R&D-based laser processing, including experimental planning, setup, measurements, and analysis. You will conceptualize and realize novel setups, integrating hardware and optical systems, and contribute to software development for data acquisition and system communication. The lab combines additive manufacturing, large-scale laser micro-processing, multiscale modeling, and AI/ML for quality monitoring and control, ultimately delivering novel nanostructured materials and their integration into devices.

Applicants must have a FH/University degree (Bachelor, Master, or PhD) in Optics, Photonics, Engineering, or a related field, with experience in ultra-fast laser processing. A background in optics, photonics, or electronics is essential, along with skills in R&D manufacturing, software development, and hardware integration. English proficiency is required; French and German are advantageous.

Empa offers a dynamic and inspiring research environment at its Thun campus near Bern, with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment. You will join a multidisciplinary project team with strong national and international collaborations, receive support for advancing the project and your own scientific ideas, and be encouraged to publish high-impact results in leading journals. The position starts in May/June 2026, lasts one year, and may be extended. Empa values inclusion and respect, welcoming all interested in innovative, sustainable, and meaningful activities.

To apply, submit your complete online application—including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons—exclusively via the Empa job portal. Applications by e-mail or post will not be considered.
