We are looking for a motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our Environmental Analytical Chemistry Group (ARIEL) at the University of Edinburgh! This project will focus on developing innovative radiolabelling techniques for common polymers (PE, PP, PVC, PET) to improve our understanding of plastic pollution in real-world environments.
?? About the Project
Plastics are widely used in various applications, but their environmental impact is a growing concern. While polystyrene (PS) is often used as a model polymer in environmental studies, it does not fully represent the diverse range of plastic pollution. This project will address this gap by developing new radiolabelling methods to track the environmental fate of key polymers and their derivatives, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of their impact on ecosystems.
?? Key Objectives:
? Develop novel radiolabelling techniques for PE, PP, PVC, and PET at the nanoscale.
? Investigate the challenges and feasibility of radiolabelling diverse polymers.
? Characterise labelled polymers using advanced techniques (DLS, SEM, TEM, FTIR, HPLC-MS).
? Assess interactions of labelled polymers with environmental matrices and organisms.
????? Candidate Profile:
We are seeking candidates with a background in chemistry, environmental science, or materials science. The ideal candidate will have:
?? Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (polymer chemistry, radiochemistry, analytical chemistry).
?? Experience with polymer synthesis and analytical instrumentation.
?? Strong problem-solving skills and an interest in environmental pollutants.
?? Excellent communication skills and a passion for publishing research.
?? Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team.
?? Why Join Us?
This PhD offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on plastic pollution and sustainable materials. You will work with state-of-the-art radiolabelling and analytical techniques, gaining valuable expertise in polymer science and environmental chemistry.
?? Apply now and be part of the solution to plastic pollution!
