We are a small but fortunate consortium who has gotten a 6-year grant to investigate the Environmental Safety of Biotechnological Plant Protection Products based on RNA and peptides (ENSAFE). It has been a dream for me for many years, since I first heard of the use of double stranded RNA as insecticides, to look into how specific these biomolecules are across species. To understand how they are dispersed in the environment, taken up by organisms and having (or not having) a biological effect. And this dream has now come true just as the first dsRNA pesticide is hitting the market in the US, together with designed peptides, which has also only been released recently. But how should we regulate these products in Europe? They are in some ways so different from the chemical pesticides, potentially more specific and thereby safe, and in other ways there are also similarities to their chemical counterparts. We aim to work closely with both other researcher in the area, and with industry and regulatory bodies.
