Food Security through Crop Yield Estimation and Satellite Data Assimilation (PhD & Postdoc) KU Leuven in Belgium

KU Leuven invites applications for PhD and postdoctoral positions in the AQUACROP-EU project, focusing on food security through crop yield estimation and satellite data assimilation. Researchers will integrate crop modeling and satellite data to develop operational online applications for yield forecasting across Europe. The project leverages AquaCrop, embedded within NASA’s Land Information System (LIS), to assimilate optical and microwave satellite observations of vegetation and soil moisture, enabling in-season ensemble yield forecasting and operational simulations for online distribution.

Successful candidates will join the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Division Soil and Water Management, in the Research Group “Land Surface Remote Sensing, Modeling and Data Assimilation” led by Professor Gabriëlle De Lannoy. Collaboration with VITO (Vlaamse Instelling voor Technologisch Onderzoek) is integral, combining expertise in crop modeling and satellite data-driven crop mapping and machine learning. The KU Leuven team has a longstanding history with AquaCrop development, while VITO pioneers satellite-based agricultural applications.

PhD candidates should have a strong interest in plant-soil interactions, food security, remote sensing, and modeling, with experience in data processing or programming (Matlab, Python, IDL, GrADS, R, or similar). Postdoctoral candidates must demonstrate in-depth experience with agricultural modeling, remote sensing, large datasets, statistics, scientific computing (Python, Matlab, Fortran, C, etc.), and high-performance computing in Linux. All applicants should possess excellent motivation, creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills in English. Experience with open source code distribution (e.g., GitHub) is valued.

The offer includes a fully funded PhD scholarship for 4 years or a postdoc position for 2 years (with possible 1 year extension), competitive salary, and support through the Arenberg Doctoral School. The start date is negotiable, but no later than September 2026. The research environment is multidisciplinary and international, with opportunities for career development and collaboration.
