About this position
The University of Liverpool Management School is offering four-year fully funded Graduate Teaching Fellowships (GTFs) for Economics PhD students, starting in October 2026. These fellowships provide a unique opportunity to combine advanced research training with hands-on teaching experience in higher education. Successful candidates will receive a comprehensive financial package, including a £20,780 annual maintenance grant, full coverage of PhD programme fees, and access to a £700 per year GTF allowance from Year 2, as well as support for conference attendance.
As a GTF, you will engage in a structured teacher training programme during your first year, leading to a formal higher education teaching qualification. This training includes mentored classroom involvement and the development of key pedagogical skills, preparing you for a competitive academic job market. Throughout the fellowship, you will balance your doctoral research with a fixed number of teaching hours, gaining valuable experience as a higher education teacher.
Applicants should hold a UK master’s degree or international equivalent in economics or a related discipline, preferably at merit or above, and demonstrate strong quantitative and programming skills. A compelling research proposal is required, with potential topics including microeconomics theory, applied microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, financial econometrics, political economy, industrial organisation, and sports economics.
To apply, candidates must prepare a research proposal, academic transcripts, degree certificates, a personal statement (with 'ULMS-GTF-2026 studentship' in the title), a CV, and contact details for two referees. International applicants should also provide passport details and English language certificates. Applications are submitted online via the University of Liverpool portal, selecting 'Economics – Doctor in Philosophy (PhD)' as the programme and 'Sponsor' as the funding source, with 'ULMS-GTF-2026' indicated in the relevant sections.
These fellowships are not compatible with other studentships such as those from the North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership or the China Scholarship Council. The stipend amount is for guidance only and may be subject to change. For further information or to discuss entry requirements, applicants are encouraged to contact the Management School’s Postgraduate Research Team.
Don’t miss this opportunity to launch your academic career with full financial support and comprehensive training at a leading UK institution. The application deadline is 8 April 2026 at 5pm UK time.
