About this position

The Department of Control Engineering and System Analysis (SAAS) at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), within the École polytechnique de Bruxelles, is offering a full-time PhD research and teaching assistant position. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in advanced research and teaching in control engineering, robotics, and related fields. The position is structured as an initial two-year contract, renewable twice, for a maximum of six years, with the expectation that the PhD will be completed within this period.

The successful candidate will split their time equally between research and teaching activities. Research topics can be chosen from the current domains developed within the SAAS team, including robotics for precision agriculture, motion planning and control of mobile robots in crowded environments, assistive robotics, marine drones for patrolling and monitoring, battery systems and energy management, control of constrained dynamical systems, and robotics for construction and infrastructure applications. The teaching component involves preparing and supervising student projects and exercise/lab sessions for courses such as Signaux et Systèmes, Automatique, Control System Design, and Projet multidisciplinaire 2.

Applicants must hold a master's degree (120 credits) in engineering sciences (ingénieur civil) and meet the requirements for PhD admission. Essential skills include excellent teaching abilities, strong mastery of dynamic system theory and control engineering, autonomy, rigor, and readiness to collaborate within the SAAS department and with external partners. Proficiency in both French and English at C1 level is mandatory.

Applications must include a CV, an application letter, a four-page note on the applicant’s PhD research project, and two letters of reference, all structured using the provided template. Incomplete applications or those not using the template will not be considered. The application deadline is 26 May 2026 at 12:00 PM. For more information, candidates may contact Mr. Emanuele Garone or Mr. Paolo Falcone via email. ULB is committed to diversity and equal opportunities, and reasonable accommodations are available for candidates with disabilities.

To apply, submit your documents via the ULB application portal. Candidates from restricted countries should email their application to [email protected]. Additional information about ULB’s gender and diversity policy and research career regulations can be found on the university’s website.
