About this position

The Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) invites applications for a full-time research and teaching position in contemporary history, based in Brussels, Belgium. This opportunity is designed for candidates seeking to pursue a PhD dissertation in Early Modern or contemporary history, with research activities conducted within the Mondes modernes et contemporains (MMC) or Sociétés anciennes, médiévales et modernes (sociAMM) research centres. The position is split evenly between teaching responsibilities and research, offering a dynamic environment for academic development and scientific publication.

Teaching duties (50% of the mandate) involve assisting in the supervision of students enrolled in history courses, contributing to the academic life of the department, and supporting the development of future historians. Research duties (50%) focus on carrying out original research leading to a PhD thesis, with the expectation of active involvement in the research centre and publication of scientific work.

Applicants must hold a Master (120) degree in History and demonstrate excellent proficiency in French, with basic skills in English and Dutch. The application process requires submission of a CV, an application letter, a four-page note outlining the proposed PhD research project, and two letters of reference. All documents must be completed using the provided template, available online. Incomplete applications or those not using the template will not be considered by the selection committee.

ULB is committed to diversity and equal opportunities, recruiting candidates based on skills regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, origin, nationality, beliefs, or disability. Reasonable accommodations are available for candidates with disabilities, disorders, or illnesses, ensuring confidentiality and support throughout the selection process. More information on ULB's gender and diversity policy can be found on their website.
