About this position
The Centre for Health Economics at Monash University is offering a fully funded 4.5-year Integrated PhD Program in Health Economics, commencing in July/August 2026 at the Caulfield campus in Melbourne, Australia. This prestigious program provides rigorous training in advanced health economics and related quantitative disciplines, starting with a one-year Master of Commerce (MCom) that includes advanced coursework, research training, and a minor thesis. Upon successful completion of the MCom year and meeting progression requirements, students advance to the PhD stage, which typically takes three and a half years and culminates in a written thesis.
PhD candidates will benefit from a generous scholarship covering full tuition fees and a tax-free stipend of AU$39,000 per annum, with outstanding students eligible for up to AU$49,000 per annum. Additional financial support is available through research and teaching assistance work, and students have opportunities for domestic and international conference travel as well as potential international research visits.
The Centre for Health Economics is renowned globally for its research excellence in the economic analysis of health and health care, hosting the largest Health Economics PhD program in Australia and the highest concentration of health economists in the Asia-Pacific region. Research themes include disadvantage and health, global and environmental health economics, economic behaviour and incentives in health, preferences in health, and economic modelling of health policies and technologies. Graduates from the Centre have secured positions at leading universities and organisations worldwide, including the London School of Economics, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of Illinois, University of York, University of Melbourne, Australian National University, Ernst & Young, the World Bank, and government health departments.
Eligibility requirements include completion of an Honours degree, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree, or a Master's degree with top marks and a research component in a relevant discipline such as health economics, labour economics, economics, econometrics, or other quantitative fields like data science, mathematical statistics, actuarial science, public health, or psychology with strong statistical training. English language requirements must be met as per Monash Business School guidelines.
