About this position

The Chen Research Group in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Central Florida is recruiting for fully funded PhD and postdoctoral positions in electrochemical materials, electrolyzer functionalization, and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM).

These openings are led by Prof. Xin Chen, who is joining UCF as an Assistant Professor and building a new research group focused on advanced electrochemical materials and systems, high-throughput electrochemical characterization, and applications in sustainable energy, hydrogen, water, carbon management, and resource recovery.

PhD position focus: development of advanced electrochemical materials and systems, including materials synthesis, electrode functionalization, electrochemical testing, materials characterization, and advanced electrochemical methods. Research areas include PGM and PGM-free electrocatalysts, functionalized electrolyzers for electrolysis and electrodialysis, interface engineering, and high-throughput electrochemical characterization.

Postdoctoral position focus: novel materials synthesis for electrode functionalization, electrolysis, electrodialysis, and high-throughput electrochemical characterization, with emphasis on SECM-based methods. The postdoc will work on local electrochemical characterization of activity, selectivity, transport, corrosion, degradation mechanisms, and electrode/interface engineering.

Eligibility highlights: PhD applicants should have or expect to receive a B.S. or M.S. in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, electrochemistry, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Postdoctoral applicants should hold a Ph.D. in a related field. Preferred backgrounds include materials chemistry, electrochemical testing, scanning probe methods, electrolysis, electrodialysis, corrosion, electrochemical separations, machine learning, and autonomous optimization.

Funding: both positions are fully funded.

How to apply: email Prof. Xin Chen with a cover letter describing research interests and relevant experience, a CV, contact information for 2-3 references, representative publications if available, and unofficial transcripts if available. The post does not list a formal deadline.

Funding details
