The University of Antwerp is offering a fully-funded, four-year PhD position in the field of autonomous 6G networks and zero-touch network and service management (ZSM), within the renowned IDLab research group. The research will explore how AI-driven control loops, distributed core architectures, and network intelligence can enable networks to autonomously mitigate failures and adapt to dynamic conditions across cloud, edge, and non-terrestrial environments.
The doctoral project centers on programmable and intelligent networks, with a strong emphasis on network virtualization (SDN/NFV), containerization, and AI/ML for networking. The successful candidate will investigate innovative mechanisms for network robustness, service continuity, and fault tolerance in heterogeneous and multi-domain environments. The position offers access to cutting-edge facilities at The Beacon (City Campus), a hub for digital innovation, and the opportunity to develop a strong publication record in top-tier venues under the supervision of leading researchers in deterministic networking.
Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a master’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with excellent academic results (at least cum laude/distinction). Required skills include programming proficiency (Python/C++), a strong foundation in network management technologies, and research ambition in autonomous network management. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of 5G or beyond-5G network architectures, experience with orchestration platforms, and experimental research. Proficiency in English is mandatory.
The scholarship includes a competitive monthly stipend, eco-vouchers, internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. Doctoral researchers benefit from a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School. The planned start date is July 2026.
