A fully-funded PhD opportunity in Comparative Neuro-Nutrition & Healthy Ageing is available at Aberystwyth University, with training and placement at the University of Reading, UK. This interdisciplinary project investigates whether cruciferous and basil microgreens, rich in bioactive compounds like sulforaphane and polyphenols, can support cognitive function, stress resilience, and gut–brain communication in adults aged 45–65. The research integrates nutrition, plant science, and cognitive neuroscience, utilizing biomarkers, EEG, and human dietary trials to identify sustainable dietary strategies for healthier ageing.

Students will gain hands-on training in phytochemistry, biomarker analysis, and human nutrition, as well as experience with EEG/ERP, cognitive testing, and data integration. The project also offers opportunities to apply biostatistics and machine learning, engage with industry, and participate in a translational neuro-nutrition placement. The supervisory team includes Dr Amanda Lloyd (lead, Aberystwyth University), Dr María José Oruna-Concha, Prof Carien van Reekum, and Dr Alexander Taylor (all University of Reading).

Applicants should have a degree in nutrition, food science, biomedical sciences, neuroscience, psychology, plant sciences, or a related field, and an interest in diet–brain interactions, biomarkers, and human trials. Full interdisciplinary training is provided. English language proficiency is required for non-native speakers. The PhD is fully funded for four years, covering a tax-free stipend (UKRI rate: £20,780 for 2025/26), research costs, and tuition fees at the standard UK/Republic of Ireland rate. At Aberystwyth University, the difference between international and home fees is covered, but visa fees, healthcare surcharge, and relocation costs are not included.
