About this position

Birmingham City University is advertising a fully funded PhD studentship in Digital Systems Governance for Smart, Sustainable, Green Innovation Districts, focused on designing a living lab framework for the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter.

The project sits at the intersection of computer science, information systems, urban innovation systems, smart cities, and sustainable development. It explores how digital platforms, urban data infrastructures, digital twins, IoT, and AI-enabled decision-support systems can improve governance, coordination, and long-term sustainability in complex innovation districts.

The research is based at Birmingham City University and is linked to collaboration with Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority. The project lead is Dr Vahid Javidroozi. The work will use a systems-oriented, interdisciplinary approach, including systems modelling, case study research, stakeholder interviews, participatory workshops, and exploratory digital concept development.

Funding includes a 42-month studentship, a tax-free stipend of £20,780 per year (2025/26 rate), and a full Home tuition fee scholarship. The opportunity is only open to UK/Home fee status holders.

Eligibility highlights: a good undergraduate degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) and a Master’s degree or near completion in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Computing, Information Systems, Data Science, Software Engineering, Smart Cities, or a closely related discipline. Applicants should show knowledge of digital technologies such as data platforms, information systems, digital twinning, IoT, and AI, and a strong interest in smart, sustainable, and green cities.
