Description

The University of Exeter is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on Floating Solar and Green Hydrogen for a Just Energy Transition in the Southwest UK. This interdisciplinary project, led by Dr Aritra Ghosh (Lecturer in Solar-Building Energy/ Built Environment/ Agrivoltaics/Floating PV/ Hydrogen) in collaboration with Misan Afinotan, PhD (University of Exeter Law School), aims to develop innovative, community-centred pathways for decarbonising heat in one of the UK’s most renewables-rich yet grid-constrained regions. The research will investigate engineering and techno-economic analysis of Floating Photovoltaics (FPV) combined with on-site green hydrogen production, geospatial assessment to identify optimal deployment sites, hydrogen system design for heat, industry, and local energy networks, and legal and regulatory frameworks covering planning, ownership, water rights, and climate justice. Community and social inclusion strategies are also a key focus, ensuring equitable access to clean energy and supporting rural resilience. FPV offers a land-efficient method to scale solar energy, improving performance and reducing water loss. Coupled with electrolysis, it provides a flexible, storable energy solution that avoids dependence on limited grid capacity, which is crucial for fair and sustainable decarbonisation in the region. This PhD is ideal for candidates with backgrounds in renewable energy engineering, environmental science, or hydrogen systems who are eager to address real-world challenges through a cross-disciplinary lens. The project is supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Doctoral Landscape Award, ensuring full funding for tuition and stipend.
