About this position

Fully funded PhD opportunity in forest ecohydrology, drought dynamics, and forest-water relations at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) in Belvaux, Luxembourg.

This PhD is part of the FORFUS doctoral training network and focuses on how forests respond to drought by studying water and energy fluxes, evaporation processes, low-volume water pathways, isotopic tracers, micrometeorology, and environmental modelling. The project includes field sites in Luxembourg, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, with collaboration involving Delft University of Technology and ETH Zürich.

The successful candidate will work within the Catchment and Ecohydrology Group in the Environmental Sensing and Modelling Unit at LIST. Duties include designing experiments with collaborators, leading field measurements of water and energy fluxes in forests, modelling field data to identify controlling processes, and participating in the interdisciplinary doctoral training unit Forest Function Under Stress.

Eligibility: MSc or equivalent in hydrology or a related environmental science field. Helpful backgrounds include micrometeorology, environmental biophysics, tree ecophysiology, soil science, and related topics. Applicants should have strong interest in field data collection and modelling using physically based numerical and statistical tools. Fluency in English is required; French is an asset. A B2 English certificate is mandatory, and the master diploma must be recognized in Luxembourg.

Funding: Fully funded PhD contract with benefits, up to 4 years (48 months), full-time. Note that university enrolment fees of 400 EUR per semester must be covered by the successful applicant.

Application: Apply online through the HR system only. Applications by email will not be considered. Submit a motivation letter, scientific CV, publication/patent list if applicable, and contact details for two references. Applications are reviewed continuously until the position is filled.
