About this position

Fully Funded PhD Position in Indoor Air Quality at the University of Cincinnati

The Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Lab at the University of Cincinnati is recruiting a highly motivated PhD student to join Dr. Tianren Wu’s research group in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management. The project focuses on indoor air quality, aerosol science, gas- and particle-phase filtration, and analytical chemistry using the MION2-Orbitrap mass spectrometer.

The selected student will conduct full-scale filtration experiments, characterize gas and particulate filter performance, and test different reagent ions for measuring indoor VOCs, PFAS, and highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs). This is a strong fit for students interested in environmental science, chemical engineering, chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, civil engineering, and related fields.

Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in a relevant field, prior experience with mass spectrometry, aerosol measurements, or ambient air trace gas analysis, and proficiency in Matlab or other programming/numeric computing languages such as IGOR, Python, or R. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and strong written/verbal communication skills are also expected.

The position is described as fully funded. No stipend amount is listed. The expected start date is August 2026 or January 2027.

To apply, prepare a single PDF containing a resume/CV, a cover letter describing qualifications, research experience, and interests, a sample of technical writing, unofficial transcripts, and TOEFL/IELTS results. Email the package to Dr. Tianren Wu at [email protected] with the subject line PhD Student Application_Your Name.

Research interests: indoor air quality, aerosol, filtration, mass spectrometry, chemical ionization, VOCs, PFAS, HOMs, air pollution, environmental engineering.
