Fully Funded PhD in International Relations and EU Enlargement at Stockholm University Stockholm University in Sweden

Stockholm University is advertising a fully funded PhD position in International Relations at the Department of Economic History and International Relations in Stockholm, Sweden.

The project is titled “Understanding Public Support for EU Enlargement” and focuses on the security, economic, and societal drivers of public opinion on EU enlargement. The research uses survey data and quantitative social science methods to study what citizens think about future EU expansion, why they hold these views, and how policymakers can improve legitimacy, credibility, and citizen engagement across Europe.

Funding and employment: The position is fully funded for 4 years as a salaried doctoral employment at 100% full-time. The role may include up to 20% teaching, research, or administration. Planned start date is 31 August 2026.

Eligibility highlights: Applicants need a Master’s degree or equivalent, at least 240 higher education credits with 60 at Master’s level, a background in International Relations or a closely related field, a Master’s thesis with independent research work, additional theoretical specialization relevant to doctoral studies, and strong English proficiency. Competitive applicants will also have quantitative research experience, international collaborative project experience, EU enlargement research experience, publications, and scientific outreach.
