About this position

Fully funded PhD opportunity at Curtin University in isotope geochemistry and geochronology, based in Perth, Western Australia. The project is part of an ARC DECRA-funded research program, Mining Earth’s Memory – From Crustal Thickness to Mineral Prediction, and focuses on understanding the evolution of Australia’s continental crust through time.

The research will use state-of-the-art in-situ geochronology and isotope geochemistry, including stable and radiogenic isotope analysis, SIMS, and LA-ICP-MS, to study accessory minerals such as zircon and apatite. Topics include crustal growth, crustal differentiation, thermal evolution, metamorphism, and mineral systems, with a strong link to geological processes and mineral resource formation.

Funding includes a tax-free stipend of AUD 38,440 per year (indexed), project support, and tuition fee offset support for eligible international students. The scholarship is available for up to 3.5 years. Start date is flexible.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Geology, Earth Sciences, Geochemistry, Petrology, Geochronology, or a related field. Strong interest in isotope geochemistry, geochronology, and crustal evolution is expected, and prior experience in geochemical analysis, fieldwork, or petrology is desirable. The successful candidate will join the Timescales of Mineral Systems Group and have access to world-class analytical facilities and fieldwork opportunities across Australia.

To apply, send a cover letter, CV, academic transcript, and contact details for two referees directly to Dr. Janne Liebmann with the email subject line DECRA PhD application. Deadline: 15 June 2026.
