About this position

PhD opportunity at Cranfield University in predictive models for sustainable mango supply chains, with collaboration from the University of Birmingham and Blue Skies Holdings Ltd.

This fully funded doctoral project sits at the intersection of data science, sensing technologies, mathematical modelling, postharvest engineering, and sustainable food systems. The research uses mango supply chains as a real-world case study to develop predictive tools and adaptive environmental control strategies that improve ripening efficiency, reduce food loss, lower energy consumption, and support Net Zero goals in global horticultural supply chains.

The student will work on sensor-based monitoring, modelling fruit ripeness and environmental conditions, and integrating mechanistic and predictive models into industrial ripening software platforms. The project combines laboratory experimentation, advanced data analysis, and industrial pilot trials, offering strong exposure to both academic research and commercial operations.

Funding: the studentship is sponsored by EPSRC, Cranfield University, the University of Birmingham, and Blue Skies. It covers full tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend/bursary of up to £24,000 per year plus fees for 3.5 years. The project page also mentions a £1,000 annual industry top-up. This funding is for Home fee status applicants only.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a first- or second-class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline. Suitable backgrounds include engineering, environmental science, food science, agricultural science, physical sciences, mathematics, data science, or other quantitative/interdisciplinary subjects. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are desirable; programming, modelling, or experimental experience is helpful but not essential.

Research environment: Cranfield University is known for sustainable engineering and agrifood systems, while the University of Birmingham contributes expertise in applied mathematics and predictive modelling. Blue Skies provides access to commercial ripening facilities, supply chain infrastructure, and operational data. The project offers interdisciplinary training, industry engagement, possible international travel, conference participation, and collaboration with academic and industry experts.

Deadline: 29 July 2026.
