About this position

The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) in Barcelona is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position in Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence as part of the MSCA COFUND – PHYNEST program. The successful candidate will join the Theoretical and Computational Nanoscience (TCN) Group, working under the supervision of Stephan Roche and José Hugo García. The research focuses on semiconducting spin qubits, leveraging artificial intelligence-driven computational workflows, and involves advanced computational modelling and simulations of quantum devices built from first principles and experimental data.

This project is highly interdisciplinary, combining quantum physics, nanoscience, machine learning, and AI. The candidate will collaborate with leading experimental groups across Europe, including the Niels Bohr Institute (Denmark), IST Austria, QuTech/TU Delft, and ICN2 experimental teams, providing a vibrant international research environment.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in Physics, Quantum Science, Nanoscience, or a related field, with demonstrated interest and skills in programming (preferably Python), computational modelling, quantum technologies, and AI. The program requires candidates to meet mobility and experience rules: applicants must not have resided or worked in Spain for more than 12 months in the 36 months before the deadline, and must not already possess a doctoral degree. English proficiency is required (TOEFL 72, IELTS 5-6.5, CEFR B2, etc.), unless previous degrees were completed in English.

The application process is competitive and transparent, with selection based on academic excellence and scientific merit. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Required documents include a CV, motivation letter, two recommendation letters, and academic transcripts. Applications must be submitted in English via the PHYNEST online platform. The deadline for applications is February 28, 2026. The fellowship provides full funding, including stipend and tuition coverage, with flexible start dates between October and December 2026.

For more information, visit the official PHYNEST call page or contact the supervisors for informal enquiries. This is an excellent opportunity for motivated graduates interested in quantum technologies, AI, and nanoscience to pursue doctoral research in a leading European research institute.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
