About this position

FoodBioSystems Doctoral Training Partnership is offering 40 fully funded and salaried PhD opportunities for the 2026 intake across leading UK universities, including Aberystwyth University, Brunel University, Cranfield University, University of Lincoln, Queen’s University Belfast, University of Reading, and University of Surrey. These positions span the entire food chain, from farm to fork, and embrace the One Health approach, integrating research in food safety, human nutrition, farmed animal health and welfare, lifelong health, precision agriculture, smart technologies, sustainable agricultural systems, reducing waste, and genomics.

Applicants from diverse scientific backgrounds such as life sciences, agriculture, food, health, microbiology, and biotechnology are encouraged to apply. The program is designed to equip students with advanced research skills and subject-specific knowledge, including a cohort training program and a three-month professional internship. Each PhD project is co-supervised across two partner institutions, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and broadening research perspectives.

The studentships are funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and provide a tax-free stipend (minimum £20,780 per year, or £22,780 at Brunel University), research costs, and tuition fees at the standard UK/Republic of Ireland rate. Most partner universities cover the difference between international and home fees, except the University of Reading, where international students must pay the difference (~£16,000–£19,000/year). Funding does not cover visa fees, healthcare surcharge, or relocation costs.

Eligibility requirements include a relevant undergraduate or master's degree in a related field, official transcripts, proof of English proficiency (if applicable), and an academic reference. Applications open on 16 December 2025, and the deadline is 26 January 2026 (10:00 GMT). Applicants may apply to a maximum of two PhD projects and are encouraged to contact lead supervisors for project-specific queries. The selection process includes shortlisting, interviews, and assessment by a selection panel. The program values equity, diversity, and inclusion, and offers support for applicants with disabilities or specific learning differences.
