About this position

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), in partnership with Lancaster University, is offering a fully funded, four-year MRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) for PhD studies starting October 2026. This prestigious scholarship program is designed to develop bridge scientists who can translate scientific innovation into real-world health benefits, particularly for vulnerable communities worldwide.

With nearly 40 diverse projects available, the DTP covers a wide range of translational research themes, including neglected tropical diseases, snakebite, resistance research and management, maternal, newborn and child health, vector biology, drug discovery and development, health policy, and lung health and tuberculosis. The program welcomes applications from exceptional candidates across biomedical sciences, biology, public health, medicine, and related disciplines.

Supervision is provided by leading experts from LSTM and Lancaster University, with project topics spanning clinical sciences, tropical disease biology, international public health, and vector biology. Some example projects include harnessing cellular folding for anti-infective therapies, understanding immune priming in vaccine co-immunization, developing diagnostics for global health, and advancing genetic control strategies for malaria vectors.

The scholarship is fully funded by the Medical Research Council, covering tuition fees, a stipend, and research costs for four years. The program is open to candidates globally, with a focus on those passionate about global health and translational research. Applicants should hold or expect to hold a relevant undergraduate or master's degree and demonstrate a strong academic record and commitment to improving health outcomes.

To apply, candidates should visit the official LSTM PhD opportunities page, review available projects and supervisors, and follow the application instructions. The deadline for applications is December 3, 2025. This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring researchers to contribute to impactful health research in a world-class academic environment.
