About this position

The Medical University of Vienna (MedUni Vienna) is offering several fully funded PhD positions within its interdisciplinary doctoral programmes, targeting outstanding candidates in artificial intelligence, machine learning, STEM, life sciences, and public health. As one of Europe’s leading biomedical research and teaching institutions, MedUni Vienna provides a vibrant scientific community, state-of-the-art research infrastructure, and close links to one of Europe’s largest university hospitals. PhD candidates will be employed by the university, receive a competitive salary (minimum €2,684.10 gross × 14 per year, adjusted for experience), and pay no tuition fees for up to four years. The structured curriculum allows flexibility to pursue individual research interests under the guidance of experienced international faculty.

Research projects span artificial intelligence and machine learning (e.g., clinical decision support, explainable deep learning for imaging, AI-driven voice restoration, in silico modeling), medical physics (e.g., neurochemical characterisation, deep learning for MRI), as well as broader life sciences and public health topics. Example projects include: clinical pathways and decision support for acute chest pain, explainable deep learning for arthritis imaging, AI-driven voice restoration, machine learning for sex differences in joint function, neurochemical characterisation of cognitive networks, and deep learning for MRI motion tracking. Life sciences projects cover tumor immunology, cardiac cancer-cachexia, lung immunity, allergy therapeutics, and skin pigmentation.

The university offers a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment, mentoring, career development support, and a central campus in Vienna, a city renowned for its quality of life. Applicants must hold or expect to soon complete a Master’s degree in a relevant field, demonstrate research competence, creativity, critical thinking, and strong English communication skills (minimum C1, CEFR). Relevant research and internship experience, especially in life sciences, are advantageous. The selection process includes document checks, online interviews with principal investigators, and a final campus visit in Vienna.

Applications must be submitted online by 30 November 2025, with up to three preferred projects and two reference letters. For more information and to view all available projects, visit the official portal. MedUni Vienna is committed to equal opportunity and encourages applications from all eligible candidates.
