About this position

The University of Southampton is offering 18 fully funded PhD positions as part of the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in AI for Sustainability. This 4-year integrated PhD program is designed for students interested in applying artificial intelligence to address challenges in sustainable development. The program is based in the UK and requires in-person attendance, especially during the first year, which consists of a taught component with core and optional modules, followed by a research phase supervised by a team of experts.

Research themes include AI for Sustainable Operations and Circular Economy, AI for Transportation and Logistics, AI for Sustainable Energy and Buildings, AI for the Natural Environment, and Sustainable AI. The program encourages applicants from multidisciplinary backgrounds such as engineering, computer science, economics, social science, mathematics, and physical science. Applicants must have a strong undergraduate or Master's degree (minimum UK 2:1 honours or equivalent), and international applicants are preferred to have a first-class degree from a top 100 world university. Non-UK/exempt country applicants must demonstrate English proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in each competency).

Funding is comprehensive: 14 positions are available for UK nationals and those with indefinite leave to remain, up to 4 for EU and Horizon associated countries, and up to 2 for international students. Each position includes a tax-free stipend of approximately £23,500 per year and full UK tuition fees for four years, with additional budgets for research, travel, and centre activities. Self-funded applications are not accepted. The program offers support through personal academic tutors, mentors, and a CDT manager, and provides access to over 200 supervisors across all university faculties.

Applicants must submit an online application form, including personal details, CV, two academic references, transcripts, degree certificates, English language qualification (if required), a research proposal (1,200-1,500 words) related to AI for Sustainability, and a personal statement. Proposals must be original and not written with generative AI tools. The deadline for applications is January 27, 2026. For more information and to apply, visit https://sustai.info/apply/ or contact [email protected].

This opportunity is ideal for students passionate about artificial intelligence, sustainability, and interdisciplinary research, offering a unique environment to develop expertise and contribute to global sustainable development goals.
