About this position

The Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) at the University of Mannheim is offering up to 25 fully funded PhD positions in Economics for highly motivated students. This internationally recognized doctoral program provides rigorous training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, with all courses taught in English. The program is structured into a two-year course phase followed by a three-year research phase, lasting a total of five years. Students benefit from guaranteed full funding throughout the program, modern research facilities, and access to world-class data and library resources.

During the first year, students complete compulsory courses in mathematics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. The second year focuses on elective field courses and the submission of a dissertation proposal. From the third year onwards, students participate in research seminars, academic writing courses, and electives supporting thesis writing. The program emphasizes academic writing, teaching, and presentation skills, preparing graduates for careers in top academic and policy institutions worldwide.

Applicants should hold a relevant master's degree or equivalent in economics or a related field, demonstrate a strong academic record, and be proficient in English. The program welcomes international students, with around 40% of the cohort coming from outside Germany. Graduates have gone on to positions at leading universities and organizations such as Princeton, Yale, Oxford, IMF, ECB, and OECD.

Application deadlines are January 15, 2026 (early) and March 31, 2026 (final). Only applications submitted via the official online portal will be considered. For more information and to apply, visit the GESS website.
