About this position

The University of Cape Town (UCT) School of Public Health is offering fully funded PhD positions in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. This opportunity is designed for aspiring researchers interested in advancing their expertise in key public health areas, including paediatric and perinatal epidemiology, infectious diseases epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, non-communicable diseases epidemiology, psychiatric epidemiology, and clinical epidemiology. The program supports doctoral research in these fields, providing advanced training at one of Africa’s leading research institutions.

Successful applicants will receive funding for three years, renewable annually based on performance. The award covers tuition and a tax-free living stipend of R380,000 per year, supporting full-time doctoral studies at UCT. Candidates are expected to participate fully in the academic life of the Division and School throughout the award period.

Eligibility requirements include completion or near completion of a Master’s-level qualification in Epidemiology and/or Biostatistics, strong quantitative and research skills, fluency in R, and demonstrated excellence in previous academic and research activities. Applicants should also possess outstanding interpersonal skills, the ability to work in a team, specialist interest in one or more of the listed epidemiology fields, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently with evidence of accomplishment in self-directed learning.
