Singapore Management University (SMU) is offering fully funded PhD and Research Assistant positions in the School of Computing and Information Systems, focusing on Machine Learning for Health and Human-Centered AI. The research areas include multimodal representation learning, vision–language models, medical video understanding, and the development of trustworthy, collaborative, and ethical AI systems. The program emphasizes fairness, accountability, transparency, and human–AI collaboration to enhance AI usability and reliability in healthcare and related domains.

PhD students benefit from a scholarship that covers tuition fees and provides a monthly stipend. Visiting students are eligible for a monthly stipend for a minimum of six months, while Research Assistants receive a competitive salary based on experience. The PhD program is open for full-time study only, with the next intake in August 2026. Applications are accepted from 1 August 2025 to 31 January 2026.

Applicants should hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. A Master’s degree is advantageous but not mandatory. Required application materials include identity documents, degree certificates, official transcripts (with grading policy), resume, two referee reports (preferably academic), a personal statement (up to 600 words), and a research statement outlining a proposed research topic. TOEFL/IELTS scores are required if the Bachelor’s degree was not taught in English. GRE/GMAT is required unless the applicant holds a degree from SMU, NUS, NTU, or SUTD. All non-English documents must be accompanied by official English translations.
