About this position
Fully funded PhD / Research Assistant opportunities are open at the Geneva Graduate Institute in Switzerland, within the Centre on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding (CCDP) and the Department of International History and Politics.
The project, “Narrative Belonging: Memory Politics and NATO Enlargement in Europe,” focuses on European history, security studies, international relations, and memory politics. The research examines NATO enlargement and post–Cold War political transformation, with attention to national identity, collective memory, diplomatic rituals, and historical narratives. Case studies include Poland, the Baltic states, the Visegrád countries, Finland, and Sweden.
Successful candidates will conduct archival research, media and discourse analysis, oral history interviews, and digital archiving of historical materials. The role also includes contributing to an open-access digital archive and completing an independent PhD dissertation aligned with the project themes.
This is a 4-year full-time appointment from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2030. Funding is described as full funding in line with Swiss National Science Foundation standards, with access to supervision, conferences, workshops, and research travel.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in history or a related field, have strong analytical and research skills, and demonstrate excellent English proficiency. Additional knowledge of Polish or Baltic languages is an advantage.
