PhD Studentship: Recovery and In-Season Training Strategies in Professional Male Cricket

This is a fully funded PhD studentship offered by the University of Essex in partnership with Middlesex Cricket. The project is embedded within a professional cricket environment and focuses on recovery, workload, physical readiness, and in-season strength and conditioning practice in professional male cricket.

The research is designed for candidates interested in applied sport science, strength and conditioning, athlete monitoring, recovery, training load, and performance support in elite team sport settings. The successful student will contribute to the wider performance programme at Middlesex Cricket, including support for academy performance squads, athlete monitoring, performance profiling, physical testing, and collaboration with coaching and support staff.

Funding: The studentship runs for three years full-time and includes a tax-free UKRI standard stipend of £23,805 per annum in 2026/2027, plus full UK tuition fees at the UK rate. Funding is available for home (UK) applicants only.

Eligibility: Applicants should normally hold at least a 2:1 Honours degree in sport science, strength and conditioning, or a related discipline. A relevant master's degree is desirable. Experience working with athletes in a performance sport setting, ideally in a team sport context, is expected. Strong data handling and analytical skills are required, with tools such as Excel, R, or Python. UKSCA accreditation or progress toward it is also desirable.
