About this position

The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) at the University of Edinburgh is inviting applications for its fully funded PhD Studentships for 2026. Recognized as one of the world’s leading centers for astrophysical research, the IfA offers doctoral candidates the opportunity to work alongside renowned astronomers and participate in cutting-edge research using data from major international missions such as JWST, the Vera Rubin Observatory, and Euclid.

Research areas for these studentships include cosmology and dark matter, exoplanet science, galaxy formation and evolution, and the application of machine learning in astronomy. The program is designed to foster excellence, inclusivity, and innovation, welcoming both UK-based and international students from diverse backgrounds. The IfA is committed to supporting diversity, flexible study, and a family-friendly research environment.

Each year, around a dozen PhD students are admitted, receiving comprehensive funding that covers full tuition fees, a living stipend, and research expenses for 3.5 years. The Career Development Scholarship is a special opportunity for UK and international students from a Black heritage or mixed Black background, offering full funding and a guaranteed nomination for the Institute of Physics Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in physics, astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field. The application process involves submitting an online application via the University of Edinburgh Application Portal (selecting a September 2026 start date), choosing up to three PhD projects from different supervisors, and providing supporting documents such as reference letters and academic transcripts. The deadline for the main PhD studentships is 5 January 2026, while the Career Development Scholarship deadline is 24 November 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by 1 February 2026, with interviews held in February and March, and final decisions made by late March 2026.

This is an exceptional opportunity to join a vibrant research community in one of Europe’s most intellectually stimulating cities, gain access to world-class facilities, and contribute to advancing our understanding of the universe.
