About this position
Umeå University is advertising a fully funded 2-year postdoctoral position in physics-informed machine control within the Digital Physics group at the Department of Physics. The project focuses on physics-informed autonomous control of heavy mobile machinery operating in rough and deformable terrain, with applications in robotics, field robotics, mechatronic systems, and physical AI.
The research direction combines modeling and simulation of physical systems, deep learning for robotics, and control and motion planning for autonomous machines. The group’s broader research includes digital twins, computational physics, multibody and multiphysical systems, non-smooth dynamics, granular material, soil, heavy equipment, and real-time simulation. The postdoc will work on fundamental studies of physics-informed control of mobile manipulators, data collection from real and simulated machines, and model development/testing in simulated environments.
The position is hosted by Umeå University in Sweden and involves close collaboration with internationally leading developers of machines, simulators, and physical AI solutions. The appointment is for 100% employment for 2 years, with a start date of 1 June 2026 or as agreed. Salary is monthly according to agreement.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent by the time of appointment. Priority is given to candidates who completed the PhD within the last three years, with some exceptions for special reasons. Strong English skills, documented experience in modeling and simulation, independence, creativity, and strong collaboration skills are required. Experience in physical-system simulation, field robotics, and mechatronic control is especially valued.
How to apply: submit a cover letter (max 1 page), CV, certified degree certificates, transcripts, copies of theses/publications if any, and contact details for at least one reference. Applications must be written in English or Swedish and submitted through Umeå University’s electronic recruitment system.
Deadline: 2026-05-01.
