A funded PhD opportunity is available at Université Laval in Quebec City, Canada, focusing on topics related to deafness, cochlear implants, sensory development, and neurotechnologies. The position is based in the Department of Anthropology and is part of a multi-year CIHR-funded project led by Professor Stephanie Lloyd. The research aims to document the experiences of deaf people who use cochlear implants, identify what is measured in clinical and research spaces, catalogue relevant experiences, and mobilize interdisciplinary expertise to understand these experiences more deeply.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative team, including international partners from Australia and the United States, and will have the opportunity to develop their own research interests within the overarching project themes. The student will be trained in project management, methods, analysis, and knowledge mobilization, and will be encouraged to present their work in seminars and workshops.

Applicants should have a background in anthropology, with expertise in science and technology studies and critical disability studies preferred. Both English and French are important for the position. The funding package includes $24,000 per year for four years, plus research expenses, with the possibility of up to $16,000 in additional merit-based funding and access to other scholarships at Université Laval. The start of studies is expected in fall 2026, and the application deadline is 15 February 2026.
