About this position

Concordia University is advertising a funded PhD position in Model Based Safety Assessment for Fly By Wire Systems, in collaboration with Bombardier. The project is hosted in the HiRAD Lab and focuses on aerospace safety engineering, model-based safety assessment, and system architecting for complex flight control systems.

The research aims to integrate safety assessment into early design decisions for modern aircraft systems. The work includes developing a generalized and partially automated framework for modeling failure propagation across heterogeneous aircraft subsystems, supporting safety-driven architectural trade studies, and validating the framework on a representative fly-by-wire architecture with technical interaction from Bombardier engineers.

This PhD is especially relevant for candidates interested in flight control systems, model-based systems engineering, reliability engineering, and software/tool development for safety analysis. The candidate will model nominal and failure behaviours of flight control technologies, contribute to system-level architectural analyses, and develop modeling and automation tools. Strong coding skills are emphasized, and prior exposure to model-based systems engineering or safety assessment methods is desirable.

The position starts in Fall 2026 and includes an industrial research internship with in-person periods at Bombardier facilities. The post notes that preference will be given to applicants eligible for Canadian funding schemes. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Announced by Jonathan Liscouët, Associate Professor at Concordia University.
