About this position

The Technical University of Munich (TUM), Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability, is offering two fully funded PhD positions in the field of biopolymer materials, with a focus on sustainable high-performance fibers and polymer science. The positions are part of the newly established Particle and Fiber Technology group led by Assistant Professor Wenwen Fang. The research group specializes in extracting and isolating bio-based polymers such as cellulose and proteins from renewable feedstocks and waste streams, aiming to develop sustainable processes for converting these materials into high-performance fibers and functional materials.

Position 1 focuses on the development and optimization of biopolymer-based fiber spinning processes, including lab setup, supervision of Bachelor/Master students, and research on sustainable high-performance fibers. Position 2 centers on fundamental polymer and cellulose science, with an emphasis on structure dynamics in cellulose and innovative approaches to biopolymer processing, including ERC-funded research on molecular-level manipulation of cellulose.

Key responsibilities include developing and optimizing fiber spinning processes (e.g., dry-jet wet spinning, core-shell fiber spinning), establishing experimental protocols, troubleshooting lab infrastructure, supporting teaching activities, supervising students, and conducting innovative research on sustainable and functional fibers. The research topic is flexible, allowing candidates to contribute their own ideas within the scope of bio-based fiber materials.

Applicants should have a Master's degree in polymer science, chemistry, materials science, materials engineering, or a closely related field. Experience with cellulose, biopolymer processing, or fiber spinning technologies is advantageous. Strong communication skills in English and practical, hands-on laboratory skills are required. The positions offer a salary of approximately 3000 € gross per month (65% TV-L E13), a three-year contract with the possibility of extension, and excellent opportunities for research, career development, and international collaboration, especially in the Nordic countries.
