This fully funded PhD project at the University of Bristol investigates how the cerebellum, specifically the Crus 1 region, processes thoughts and feelings to guide healthy behaviour. Traditionally associated with movement and reflexes, the cerebellum is now recognised for its role in cognition, language, emotion, and social behaviour. The project aims to uncover how neurons in Crus 1 integrate signals related to internal states (such as emotions) and external cues (such as social signals), with a particular interest in the region’s relevance to autism spectrum disorder. The research will be conducted in the Chadderton and Anastasiades labs, using mouse models to study the encoding and relay of cognitive and emotional information within the cerebellum. Techniques include viral tracing (such as monosynaptic rabies tracing) to map neural connections and advanced neural activity monitoring during behavioural tasks. The student will receive interdisciplinary training in bioscience research, neural circuit analysis, and transformative technologies. The SWBio DTP programme supports students from diverse backgrounds, offering flexibility for those with caring responsibilities, disabilities, or other personal circumstances. The studentship covers a four-year period, providing an annual stipend, full tuition, research costs, and additional funds for fieldwork, conferences, and placements. Up to 30% of studentships are available for international applicants. Applicants should have a strong background in neuroscience or biology and an interest in neurobiological research.
