About this position

With the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) , the Mobility Observatory and Data Analytics Lab (MODAL) in the Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science at George Mason University is looking to fill two doctoral research assistantship positions starting in Fall 2025.

Position Summary: We are seeking candidates with strong foundations and interests in addressing the complex interplay among disasters, the environment, and human mobility. The focus will be on: (i) understanding the escalating mobility risks that communities face due to disasters; (ii) identifying solutions and strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of disasters on mobility; and (iii) foregrounding innovative, sustainable, and community-focused responses to enhance mobility resilience. Outstanding candidates will demonstrate skills and experience in travel behavior analysis, evacuation modeling, GIS-T, spatiotemporal modeling, and natural hazard risk assessments.

Qualifications and Experience: Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Engineering, or a related field. A solid background in statistical analysis and mathematical programming, as well as proficiency in technical writing and strong communication skills, are essential. Candidates should possess robust critical thinking and problem-solving abilities and have a keen desire to work collaboratively in a vibrant work culture.
