About this position
The University of Reading invites applications for the Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) in Computer Science, a unique opportunity to launch your academic career by combining doctoral research with hands-on teaching experience. This part-time, fixed-term position allows you to pursue a PhD while supporting teaching activities within the Department of Computer Science. GTAs spend approximately one quarter of their time assisting with laboratory sessions and other teaching duties, while dedicating the remaining time to their PhD research on pre-defined, cutting-edge computational science problems.
Research themes available for selection include Trustworthy and Responsible AI, AI for Health, AI for Environmental Science and Sustainability, AI for Digital Humanities, and AI for Embedded/Edge Computing. Applicants must select and rank three themes in their covering letter as part of the application process. The department offers comprehensive support, including access to MSc courses and bespoke training through the Postgraduate and Researcher College, ensuring professional development as both a researcher and educator. Pedagogical training is provided, so prior teaching experience is not required.
Funding is fully available for UK Home students for four years, comprising a competitive combined salary and stipend package (£9159 salary and £16038 stipend per annum), with PhD fees waived at the Home level. International students receive a Home/ROI fee waiver but must pay the difference between Home and international fees (approximately £20,000 per year, subject to annual increases). Working hours for teaching are variable but will not exceed 20 hours per week. The offer of funding and employment is contingent upon registration as a full-time doctoral student.
Applicants must ensure they have the right to work in the UK, as this role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. The application deadline is 8 March 2026 at 23:59. For further information, contact Professor Shadi Basurra (Head of Department of Computer Science) or Professor James Ferryman. Apply online via the University of Reading job portal, including your ranked research themes in your covering letter.
