About this position

This PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton, titled "Harnessing Topological Light through Metasurfaces for Intelligent 3D Endoscopy," offers an exciting interdisciplinary research experience at the intersection of photonics, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence. Supervised by Dr Xu Fang (School of Electronics and Computer Science) and Dr Eric Plum (Optoelectronics Research Centre), the project aims to develop metasurface-enabled intelligent optical sensing for rapid and accurate identification of miniature features in endoscopy. The research leverages recent funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Leverhulme Trust, ensuring access to world-class nanofabrication and characterisation facilities.

Metasurfaces are planar nanostructures that allow precise control over the amplitude, phase, and polarisation of light, pushing the boundaries of optical engineering. These advanced capabilities are crucial for compact, polarisation- and phase-sensitive optical detection systems, which have shown significant promise in biomedical imaging. The project will focus on deep-learning-assisted metasurface design to achieve extreme topological manipulation of light, with practical implementation through wafer-scale fabrication in the university’s cleanroom facilities.

Students will receive comprehensive interdisciplinary training in computational photonics, nanofabrication, and optical characterisation, preparing them for careers in both academia and industry. The project includes close collaboration with University Hospital Southampton, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), offering opportunities for international research engagement and the translation of fundamental optical concepts into practical imaging systems.

Entry requirements include a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent, with a preferred background in photonics, physics, electronics, or related disciplines. The university welcomes highly motivated candidates who are eager to advance the field of light manipulation and intelligent sensing. Applications should include a research proposal, CV, two academic references, degree transcripts/certificates, and proof of English language qualification if applicable.

Funding is available for both UK and international students. Horizon Europe fee waivers automatically cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students. Competition-based Presidential Bursaries and studentships typically cover UK-level tuition fees and provide a stipend for living costs for top-ranked applicants. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is recommended.

The University of Southampton is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusivity, as demonstrated by its Athena SWAN award. The institution offers generous maternity policies, onsite childcare, and a range of benefits to support employee well-being and work-life balance. Sustainability is a core value, with the university holding the Platinum EcoAward.

For further information or an initial conversation, prospective applicants can contact Dr Xu Fang at [email protected] or the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at [email protected]. The application deadline is June 30, 2026.
