High Performance Membranes Inspired by the Cell Membrane: Synthesis KU Leuven in Belgium

This PhD position at KU Leuven's SCMlab focuses on the synthesis of high-performance membranes inspired by biological cell membranes. The research operates at the intersection of soft matter physical chemistry and bio-inspired materials science, aiming to address challenges in sustainability and energy through innovative material design. Membranes are crucial in various technological and industrial sectors, and biological phospholipid membranes serve as a model for developing technical membranes with superior selectivity and efficiency.

The project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC starting grant CHIMERA), seeks to synthesize polymeric building blocks capable of self-assembling into large-scale biomimetic membranes. By manipulating the composition of these building blocks, the research aims to tailor membrane transport properties, introducing selectivity for specific chemical compounds. The position is ideal for candidates with a master's degree in chemistry and experience in organic or polymer chemistry. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

The funding covers four years, with an initial one-year contract extendable upon positive evaluation.
