About this position
This PhD project at Loughborough University investigates the effectiveness of high Solar Reflective Index (High-SRI) liquid-applied roofing membranes in mitigating overheating risks in UK buildings and urban environments. The research aims to determine whether these membranes can reduce overheating without causing unintended consequences such as increased winter energy consumption, condensation, mould growth, or performance degradation due to ageing and soiling. The study will focus on flat, shallow-pitch, and curved roof applications, which are technically relevant for the UK context.
Working in collaboration with the Roberts Group (subject to contract), the project will employ a combination of monitored demonstrator evidence, calibrated building-performance modelling, future climate scenario analysis, and uncertainty-aware decision support. The goal is to build a robust evidence base and provide practical guidance for industry professionals and policymakers, helping them identify where reflective roofing is a credible climate adaptation measure.
The position is part of the Informatics for Multi-hazard Risk and Resilience (i-Risk) NERC Doctoral Focal Awards (DFA) in Environmental Sciences. The successful candidate will join the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering and benefit from a multidisciplinary research environment. The studentship is funded by UKRI through the i-Risk Doctoral Focal Award, offering a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum for 3.5 years, plus tuition fees at the UK rate. Outstanding international candidates may receive a full international fee waiver, although only 30% of studentships can be awarded to international applicants due to UKRI rules. No bench fees are required.
Applicants must hold, or expect to soon obtain, a very good undergraduate or Master’s degree (at least UK 2:1 honours or equivalent international qualification) in a relevant subject. EU and international candidates must achieve an IELTS score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each competency. Minimum English language requirements apply, and further details are available on the university’s international website. The application process includes submitting a two-page personal statement (one page on research interests and rationale, one page addressing specific questions), a CV, academic transcripts and certificates, and an IELTS/TOEFL certificate if applicable. Interviews will be conducted remotely via Microsoft Teams during the week commencing 29 June 2026.
Both UK and international candidates are eligible to apply. The project is available full-time (3.5 years) or part-time (7 years). Applicants are encouraged to contact the supervisors by email to discuss project-specific aspects before submitting their application. For general queries, contact [email protected]. The application deadline is 9 June 2026, and the expected start date is October 2026.
To apply, submit your application online via the Loughborough University portal, selecting ‘Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering (Built Environment)’ as the programme name and quoting reference IRISK-26-LU-10. Familiarise yourself with the i-Risk programme before applying. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in climate adaptation, building performance, informatics, and environmental science.
