This fellowship enables highly qualified researchers to conduct independent research in collaboration with a host at a German research institution of their choice. The fellowship is open to postdocs who have completed their PhD within the last four years and experienced researchers who completed their PhD within the last twelve years. Applicants must not be German nationals and should not have resided in Germany for more than six months in the 18 months prior to application. A host acceptance from a German professor and two expert recommendation letters are required. Candidates should have a strong publication record in internationally reviewed journals. Language requirements include good knowledge of German or English for natural sciences and engineering, and for humanities, social sciences, and medicine, as needed for the research project.

The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of €2,700 for postdocs and €3,200 for experienced researchers, with additional benefits such as family allowances, health insurance subsidies, travel allowances, and language courses. The duration is 6–24 months for postdocs and 6–18 months for experienced researchers, with flexibility to divide the stay into up to three periods within three years. The program is fully funded and supports research in all academic fields, including biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, medical science, computer science, environmental science, neuroscience, materials science, psychology, sociology, economics, political science, philosophy, and anthropology.
