About this position

This PhD project at Cardiff University investigates the formation and evolution of compact binaries—systems of black holes and/or neutron stars—through the lens of gravitational wave astronomy. Since the landmark detection of a binary black hole merger in 2015, hundreds of such events have been observed by the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA gravitational-wave interferometers. By analyzing the signals captured by these instruments, researchers can infer key properties of the sources, such as component masses, spins, distances, and orbital eccentricities. These parameters offer vital clues about the binaries' origins, including their formation channels, merger histories, and the environments in which they evolved.

The project aims to use advanced data analysis, statistical inference, and computational modelling to interpret the population of compact binary mergers and uncover the astrophysical processes that shape them. Research areas include artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning, mathematical modelling, probability, and statistics, all applied to astrophysical data. The successful candidate will join the Cardiff School of Physics and Astronomy, a department recognized for its commitment to equality, diversity, and responsible research assessment.

The position is fully funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for 3.5 years, covering tuition fees, a UKRI standard stipend (£20,780 for 2025/26), and additional support for training, research, and conference attendance. The studentship is open to both UK/home and international applicants, with no fee difference for international students. Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a first-class or good 2.1 degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field, and possess skills in quantum physics, optics, semiconductors, technology, and engineering.

English language proficiency is required (IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 5.5 in sub-scores).
